Francis Augustus Silva

Francis Augustus Silva was an American painter born in 1835 in New York City. Largely self-taught, he initially worked as a sign painter before pursuing fine art. His career was briefly interrupted by service in the American Civil War, after which he dedicated himself fully to painting. Silva became known for his luminous seascapes, particularly of the Eastern Seaboard, where he captured the interplay of light and atmosphere with remarkable precision. His works often feature calm waters, soft skies, and an almost poetic tranquility that distinguished his style.
