Charles Lees
Charles Lees (1800–1880) was a distinguished Scottish painter renowned for his portraits and depictions of sporting scenes. Born in Cupar, Fife, Lees trained under the eminent portraitist Sir Henry Raeburn in Edinburgh. Following a six-month sojourn in Rome, he returned to Edinburgh, establishing himself as a prominent portrait artist. In 1830, Lees was elected a Royal Scottish Academician, reflecting his significant contributions to Scottish art.
In the 1840s, Lees expanded his repertoire to include sporting subjects, gaining acclaim for his detailed and dynamic compositions. His most celebrated work, "The Golfers" (1847), captures a grand match at St Andrews and is often regarded as the most famous golfing artwork globally. This painting not only showcases his technical skill but also provides a vivid portrayal of 19th-century sporting culture.
Throughout his career, Lees maintained a studio in Edinburgh and contributed significantly to the Royal Scottish Academy, where he also served as Treasurer. He passed away in Edinburgh on 20 February 1880 and was laid to rest in Warriston Cemetery. Today, his works are celebrated for their historical significance and artistic excellence, offering insight into the sporting and social life of 19th-century Scotland.
