French Diamond and Ruby Crescent Moon Brooch

A Royal Legacy in French Gold and Gems

This extraordinary mid-19th century brooch is a masterwork of antique French design—featuring a double-row crescent moon set with 40 old European–cut diamonds and a detachable spray of diamonds and natural rubies. Dating to around 1860, the piece blends neoclassical elegance with remarkable versatility, crafted in a romantic combination of silver and rose gold.

Convertible Design with Symbolic Motifs

The crescent moon anchors the composition, shimmering with antique diamonds in open-back settings. Attached discreetly from the reverse side, the graceful spray of leaves and blossoms is adorned with 36 additional diamonds and four vibrant rubies. This floral accent connects via a removable hinged pin and early C-clasp, allowing the brooch to be worn in two distinct ways.

Historical Provenance and Global Journey

Its subtle curvature suggests it may have been designed for ceremonial wear—possibly commissioned by a Maharaja to be worn as a turban ornament, giving the piece both cultural and historic gravitas. It was acquired in 2017 from a respected dealer in Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, enhancing its story with an international touch.

Dimensions and Craftsmanship

Measuring 70mm across and 33.4mm high, the brooch’s scale is commanding without overwhelming. Weighing approximately 16 grams, it is constructed in silver-topped gold, a traditional technique used in high-quality 19th-century jewelry to enhance brilliance while preserving the warmth of gold.
